The Cheonggyecheon is one of the most relaxing places in Seoul (almost as good as going to jinjilbang)! The Cheonggyecheon is a 5.8 km stream that runs through the heart of Seoul. While it is just off Sejongro, one of the busiest boulevards in the city, it is extremely quiet because it is 4.6km below street level. It magically starts in the heart of Downtown Seoul and courses through the neighborhoods of Jongno and Dongdaemun before it meets the Jungnangcheon and eventually empties into the Han River.

The renewal of the Cheonggyecheon has helped increased the wildlife returning to the area...
The Cheonggyecheon Restoration, completed in 2005, involved uncovering the stream, which had been covered over in the 1950’s to build a multi-lane elevated highway. The Restoration of the Cheonggyecheon serves as a symbol that Seoul has advanced as a city designed for people and not just a city focused on function.
This of the stream pays tribute to how Korean ajummas would wash clothes in the stream back in the day.

The Cheonggyecheon is about 4m below street level and most of it is covered in this pretty ivy.
